WOW and Beachcombers: A New Tradition

What a success for the Burroughs Physical Education!

Week on Wheels ("WOW")
Seven classes (over 200 Burroughs students) took to the bike paths for a tour of Lake Harriet. Sixty kids at a time ventured from Burroughs gym, around the lake and back within a 55 minute PE class. There were more than 175 bicycles in the gym (it looked like a bike shop); many students were willing to share their bikes and/or helmets with those students that did not have access to one. The 3rd, 4th and 5th grade riders showed used good bicycle safety skills and used respectful bike etiquette. Over 15 parent helpers contributed with supervision and support. Thank you parents!

Beachcombers
The "Beachcombers" in K, 1st and 2nd grades jogged to and from the beach at Lake Harriet and made sand castles during their 55 minute Physical Education class. Burroughs students ran hard for a continuous run challenge. Fourteen classes with over 350 students; 60 at a time
ran the parkway path and combed the beaches. Over 10 parents volunteered to run with the students as they embarked on their expedition.

2005-06 Budget Information

There were many questions at the September PTA meeting about the school's budget and how it is determined. We've posted several documents on the Site Council page that help explain the budget, including the PowerPoint presentation Dan Carlsen presented at last May's PTA meeting and supporting information. You'll find all the documents under Policies and Frequently Asked Questions.

Book Fair Events

In addition to buying books and eating lunch at Burroughs on Saturday, your family can take part in some other special events.

Teachers will have picked out books for their wish lists. Please visit the wish list table to pick out a book to give your child's teachers -- don't forget the specialists and reading and math resource teachers!!

You can contribute a book or two to our "Armfuls of Books" charity, which supplies books to Burroughs children who might not have been able to buy their own books. Last year 100 books were purchased for this program!

Our new event, the Reading Corner, has an all-star lineup of teachers and staff who will read to the kids in a special part of the gym. Come and see your teachers read! The schedule (as of 9/28) is as follows:
  • 11:15 Mrs. Butchert
  • 11:30 Mr. Kroening
  • 11:45 Ms. Blossey, Mrs. Fee, and Ms. Alvarez
  • 12:00 Mr. Cadotte
  • 12:15 Mrs. May
  • 12:30 Mrs. Lasser
  • 12:45 Ms. Spooner
  • 1:00 Ms. Johnson
  • 1:15 Mr. Mazyck

What's for Lunch on Saturday?

Remember not to eat lunch at home on Saturday -- the PTA is having a pizza lunch together with the Book Fair! We are serving pizza, hot dogs, cake, ice cream, and pie in the cafeteria. This is not only a fun gathering, but also a fundraiser for the PTA. Volunteer opportunities still exist -- please call Lisa Broek at 824-6693.

Here's the menu:
  • Cheese or Pepperoni pizza slices (from Bieko's Pizza) = $2.00
  • Yogurt = $0.50
  • Chips = $0.50
  • Pie or Cake = $1.50
  • Cookies = $0.50
  • Milk = $0.50

PTA Book Fair and Pizza Lunch this Saturday!

Don't forget the PTA Bookfair and Pizza Lunch this Saturday, October 8th. There will be hundreds of books to choose from at this Scholastic Book Fair: Preschool, early readers, readers, middle school, and some adult selections. There will be fiction and nonfiction, and Spanish selections of each, too.

Hours are 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Gym.

This is a yearly fundraiser for the Media Center and the PTA, plus it is fun to get new books! If you forgot to volunteer, opportunities still exist, please call Leslie Maynard at 922-3179 or Sarah LeDoux at 827-3181.
