Congratulations, LEGO Lakers!

Burroughs's three FIRST LEGO League teams participated in a regional tournament Saturday in Lino Lakes. One of the teams, the LEGO Lakers, scored well in all categories and qualified for the State Tournament on January 22 at Benilde-St. Margaret! Besides earning a spot at State, the LEGO Lakers impressed the judges with their enthusiasm and sportsmanship and were awarded the tournament's Team Spirit award.

Another of the teams, the Burroughs Rockets, created a robot that performed extremely well on the Challenge table and won the Division 1 head-to-head competition, earning the Performance award for the division!

Congratulations to all the teams who participated in this great program, and thanks to all the volunteer coaches and parents who supported them.

Mr. Hofmann Blogs Choir

Mr. Hofmann has become the latest Burroughs teacher to start communicating classroom news via the Burroughs Web site. Today, he's posted details of the Choir trip he's organizing for the fourth and fifth graders in January. You can read more about it by clicking here, and in the future you can click the Music link under Burroughs Blogs on the right side of this page to find out what's happening with Burroughs Music.

Floor plans are now on the Web site!

Ask and you shall receive. At tonight's PTA meeting I mentioned that I had once had a request to post floor plans for the building on the Web site, but hadn't been able to locate anything beyond the early architectural drawings. Mr. Cadotte graciously (and efficiently) complied and they were in my email box by the time I got home. You can find links to them on the Find Us page. They're rather large--be patient while they load!

UPDATE: Some parents have expressed concern about having such detailed plans online and available to the public. We've taken them off the Web site. Look for big, laminated versions posted at school in the near future instead!

Minneapolis Park & Rec Registration Goes Online!

You know those long registration lines we parents form at Lynnhurst and other area park buildings? And that binder-and-pencil registration process they use? It's all about to go away. If you're planning on registering your child for activities at Lynnhurst, Linden Hills, Lyndale Farmstead, or about two dozen other rec centers in Minneapolis, you can do so online starting Monday, December 6, at 6:00 PM. Chuck at Lynnhurst is urging parents to go online and create a member profile in advance. Don't forget to add sub-members for each family member you'll want to register.

On Monday evening, go to the Minneapolis Park & Rec program list and find the rec center and activity you want to register for. There will be an online registration link. Click on it and follow instructions.

Then shed a quiet tear for the lost camaraderie of that summer registration line.

PTA Meeting Tuesday

The next PTA meeting is Tuesday, December 7, 6:30 - 8:00. Jan Fransen will help us navigate our way through the Burroughs Web site and representatives from Anthony Middle School will be present to share information and answer questions. We will also be discussing ways that Burroughs parents can advocate for public schools at the legislature. Please join us! Questions? Call Becky Wright at 825-5053.

Penny Pals -- Every Penny Counts

Be a PENNY PAL! Bring in those coins by December 14. All money collected goes to a great organization called Centro Cultural Chicano. The center provides help to Spanish speakers, serves as an emergency food shelf, and also offers an Early Childhood program.

Each classroom will collect coins and at the end of our drive they will be displayed in the Media Center.

Paper bills and good old checks are also joyfully accepted. Make checks to Centro Cultural Chicano.

Parents: If your family or workplace would also like to support our community service project, please send cash or a check made out to Centro Cultural Chicano. Your donations will be used to buy essential care items for children.

Burroughs Physical Education On the Web

The Burroughs Physical Education team has long maintained a Web site with weekly information on what the kids are doing in Gym and what's coming up. You can also find the link on the Specialist News page.

The Yearbook Committee Wants Your Photos!

Do you have photos that would be could be used in the 2004-05 Burroughs Yearbook? Digital photos of at least 3.1 megapixels and use the optical zoom (rather than digital zoom) on your camera can be emailed to Ms. Alvarez. You may also submit good quality photos that can be scanned. Questions? Contact Ms. A or Lisa McCormick.

Late Start on Thursday!

Remember that school begins two hours late, at 10:40, on December 9. Buses will run their regular morning routes two hours later than usual. Dismissal is at the regular time. Morning kindergarten will meet with an abbreviated schedule.

Parents using Minneapols Kids, please check with Minneapolis Kids for details about the schedule.
